Shimon Mizhari takes Ice Bucket Challenge, does not use Jules Rimet Trophy

Videos like these are inevitable in August 2014, it seems, as millions worldwide get in on the fad of video-capturing and uploading their attempts at taking the “Ice Bucket Challenge” — and hopefully subsequently donating to ALS research and patient care provision efforts.

Taking up the Challenge this weekend was longtime Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball club chairman Shimon Mizrahi, who begins the Challenge by upending one of the team’s innumerable trophies from what must be one seriously gargantuan case. (Don’t worry, he gets finished off properly before it’s over.)

Disappointingly, employed in the Challenge is not the Euroleague’s 2013-14 Jules Rimet Trophy, but rather an Israeli Basketball Super League trophy, of which Maccabi has won three of the past four, four of the last six, and just 50 of 59 since the league’s formation in 1953-54. (That’s a lot of potential nominations for Mizrahi and the organization…)
